About Kumihimo

The charm of Kumihimo
Kumihimo is made by interlacing several to dozens of thread bundles. The beautiful three-dimensional structure draws deep shadows on the surface. In addition, the thread is firmly woven by the craftsman's hand, giving the fabric a unique tension. Using 100% SILK threads that are dyed in thousands of colors every year by craftsmen, many colorful patterns are expressed in a single thin string. It takes one craftsman two full days to make a single necktie. Kumihimo is a crystallized human time.

Braiding
Around the world, there are three major methods of textile production; weaving, knitting and braiding. Braiding is done by diagonally overlapping a set of threads that are tied off at one end in a zigzag pattern, creating an ever-lengthening cord. The cord created is called kumihimo.

The Way of Braiding
The work is all about endless repetition. With constant rhythm and hand movements, a homogenous cord is produced. It’s important to empty your mind and focus on the present moment.

True Beauty
There are hundreds of different ways to braid kumihimo, broadly classified into hiragumi and kadogumi styles. Color order, thread count, and structure dramatically change the final result.
